Colorado Stone Monument Signs

Boulder Colorado Stone Signs

Signdealz just finished this amazing flagstone directory for Boulder’s Municipal Airport on Airport Road. We were excited to get this project and build another sign representing the City of Boulder.

Boulder Municipal Airport Monument

The existing weathered directory had many problems. First, it looked horrible. The white background and blue tenant panels were faded and there was not enough tenant panels for the Airport’s growing population of businesses. We worked with Tim Head, Airport Director, on developing a new directory. Tim wanted a monument sign that would provide adequate information to people looking to find one of the many businesses at the airport and bring a historic look that would serve the people of the City of Boulder for years to come. Since 1970, Signdealz has done many of the Boulder’s iconic signs, so we knew where to start.

With direction from Tim, we decided to use a flagstone base. Flagstone has a rustic look and flowed with the large flagstone entrance sign off of Airport Road. There are many types and colors of flagstone, however Tim chose to stay with Red as to match the existing stone signs.

When it came to the directory Tim decided to go with a non-illuminated directory in order to keep the cost down. This provided some challenges when it comes to being able for customers to be able to read it at night. In order to overcome this problem we recommended using reflective graphics. Reflective vinyl allows both the utility of regular vinyl, but has reflective particles allowing light to shine off the graphics, similar to a stop sign. When it came to color, we chose to use Bronze Tone paint. This color flowed with the base and helped to create that historic feel Tim was looking for.

Things to Keep in Mind when buying this kind of sign:

  1. The type of stone you use can increase the cost of the sign quickly. Ensure you do your homework and get samples of the stone before you start designing the sign.
  2. Get a good Mason. It can be difficult getting a good mason! The other thing is when it comes to bidding a project their bids seem to be all over the place. Get at least 4 bids and use someone whit a good reputation.
  3. Stone bases require a large foundation. Ensure you get your locates done before you dig!
